The G&T tour

For fun, we're going to see if we can have a G&T in each capital city on our route.  It'll be interesting to see where we can get one and how much they cost each.  I guess we'll have to compare in USD.

Windhoek - Arebbusch Travel Lodge
2.88
Gordon's Special London Dry
Schweppes. Sparkling with enough quinine - beware mozzies
Yes both
Convenient setting - at the campsite, so no drink/driving. Service with a smile. Djin tried to nick Tonic's G&T and pretended she didn't realise!
Luanda - Cais de Qua.4tro (Quay 4!) on Ilha do Cabo
7.30
Gordon's London Dry
Welwitschia Tonic Water - local is lekker
Yes both, plus shot of lemon juice. A bit sharp!
Enjoyed with Ana, Luandan native and our hostess with the mostest - our new BFF. Fantastic setting, with a great view of the hairy city twinkling across the port. Venue too posh for Peggy, who had to stay in the car and shout at the guarda.
Kinshasa - Sr Harry's
13.00
Gordon's London Dry
Schweppes
Came with melted ice - we thought we got a cheap double. Had to ask for lemon and got a wedge.
Enjoyed with pizzas, chased by beer after 6 weeks of limited food variety and alcohol rations in Kibeti. Stunning view of the mighty Congo River from the terrace.
Brazzaville - Container Bar
1.40
Pre-mixed Royal Club GinTonic
Pre-mixed
None
Enjoyed with fellow overlanders Hans-Peter, Sabine and Roman at a container bar up the road from where we're staying. Pre-mixed G&T in a 600ml bottle. Not the coldest drink, but we had one each anyway, and then shared a third, just in case. 9% alcohol hit us over dinner!
Libreville - Tropicana Hotel
7.14
Gordon's London Dry
D'jino Indian Tonic out of a glass bottle
Yes, ice melted in equatorial heat, making it look like a double
Taken medicinally, in an effort to recover from city blues.
Yaoundé – Mt Fébé Hote
8.20
Gordon's London Dry
Top Tonic (local brand) in a glass bottle
Yes, ice melted in more equatorial heat and 2 wafer thin slices of lemon
In celebration of 6 months on the road. Drank with a straw at Mt Fébé Hotel next to the pool, overlooking a golf course and Yaoundé urban sprawl while silently cheering on a something local women having her swimming lesson.
Abuja – Sheraton Hotel
4.00
Gordon's London Dry (had to ask for it twice after virgin tonics offered. Imagine!
Teem Tonic (Nigeria's local brand). 2 bottles shared between 3 of us - we're on a budget!
Yes, both. Ice melted long before the drink was finished
Enjoyed at the Sheraton Hotel, like proper larnies. Only, we were tucked around the back, camping with the guard dogs. The bar let us drink in the kid's area as Peggy was with us. We were joined by Chris, a fellow overlander from England, who is on honeymoon without his wife!
Porto-Novo – Centre Songhai
Unknown. We drank from our own stocks
Le Vieux, nice cheap French stuff
Schweppes
Crushed ice and chunks of lemon grown on the Songhai estate where we stayed
We tried several bars in Porto Novo, but none had tonic in stock. The bar at Centre Songhai offered only gin but gave us permission to bring our own tonic. Then they discovered the gin bottle was empty, so we were on our own.
Lomé – Belle Epoch Restaurant
5.60
Gordon's London Dry
Schweppes Tonic in a local glass bottle
A little ice and a slice of lemon (why is there never enough ice???)
Taken en route between Benin and Ghana at the Belle Epoch Restaurant on the day we did 3 countries on the 3rd. Chased breakfast omelette with a G&T at 10am.
Accra – Maquis Tante Marie
5.26
Beefeater (nice for a change)
Schweppes Tonic (bottled in Accra)
Lots of ice, brought in our own little ice bucket. No lemon. Can't have everything, eh?
Drunk at a table called Lomé in an Ivorian restaurant Maquis Tante Marie, while eating local Ghanaian dishes as Cote d'Ivoire got thrashed by Nigeria. Ambience deafening - too close to the airport.
Ouagadougou – La Flôret
Forgot to record
Gordon's London Dry (as usual)
Youki Tonic
Big chunks of ice (melts quickly in 38 deg +). 2 big chunks of lemon.
Drunk while seranaded by a Togolese Duet singing “Let It Be” in a French African accent. Nice to sing along. Attended by swarms of mosquitos.

  2. This is brilliant! I could do a G&T tour (without the hard bits). Discovered a new Gin in Lisbon recently - Gin Mare and is served with rosemary and an olive. Something we will have when we next meet up :-)
